One of the motifs that appears in the novel is the idea that humans have to sacrifice their own happiness for the greater good. Everything needs to be sacrificed for the greater good When she takes care of Travis for example, she makes a habit out of telling him the stories her mother used to tell her about the ocean and about the beauty of it. Talking about the oceanĪ common motif in the novel is that Mary frequently talks about the ocean. For Mary however, the paths are proof that there is life outside their closed community and they also represent for her the possibility that she could one day escape her village. Unfortunately, since no one ever leaves the village, no one knows where the paths lead to. Mary describes the village she lives in and she also describes various paths that go into the woods. Hazel is a young noblewoman who-by society’s standards-should be concerning herself with securing her future by becoming a wife and, eventually, a mother. The title hides a double meaning, because while our intrepid heroine, Hazel, indeed does find love in the book, it’s truly her infatuation with the human body that takes center stage. ![]() That’s what you’ll find in Anatomy: A Love Story. I picked up this book because it gave me Frankenstein vibes, and while historical fiction is not my go-to genre, I’m a sucker for a female-led science-fiction novel, especially when it’s equal parts gruesome and lovely.
